Three Points to Consider After Ravi

Well, it’s true. Ravi Zacharias, a mentor and friend of mine, was living a double life. Based on the “Report of Independent Investigation into Sexual Misconduct of Ravi Zacharias,” conducted by the Atlanta-based Miller and Martin law firm—Ravi lived a double life. Ravi, one of the world’s greatest Christian apologists—who defended the faith all around the world—was, at the same time, a sexual predator. How can that possibly be? In the opening of the report, it states: “We confirmed one of the three accounts described in the Christianity Today article and found significant evidence of sexual misconduct involving additional massage therapists. We also reviewed Mr. Zacharias’s electronic devices and found evidence of text- and email-based relationships with women who were not his wife, as well as over 200 “selfie”-style photographs of women.” I realize there are many who doubt the veracity of the report and feel Ravi was incapable of committed such a scandal. But I assure you, the reports are true. RZIM, who authorized the investigation, have posted on their website an open letter approved by the International Board of Directors their shock and grief over the findings of Ravi’s rampant sexual misconduct. They expressed, “We now know based on the investigation that Ravi engaged in a series of extensive measures to conceal his behavior from his family, colleagues, and friends.” To give you just a taste of what Ravi did to show you this is no small accusation against a dead man, here’s a summary posted on Christianity Today, “Even a limited review of Zacharias’s old devices revealed contacts for more than 200 massage therapists in the US and Asia and hundreds of images of young women, including some that showed the women naked. Zacharias solicited and received photos until a few months before his death in May 2020 at age 74. Zacharias used tens of thousands of dollars of ministry funds dedicated to a “humanitarian effort” to pay four massage therapists, providing them housing, schooling, and monthly support for extended periods of time, according to investigators. One woman told the investigators that “after he arranged for the ministry to provide her with financial support, he required sex from her.” She called it rape. She said Zacharias “made her pray with him to thank God for the ‘opportunity’ they both received” and, as with other victims, “called her his ‘reward’ for living a life of service to God,” the report says. Zacharias warned the woman—a fellow believer—if she ever spoke out against him, she would be responsible for millions of souls lost when his reputation was damaged.” It’s important to point out that the 12-page final report is not exhaustive. The four-month investigation only discovered a fraction of the sexual abuse committed by Ravi. This means, in all likely hood, there will be more horrific news about the secret affairs of Ravi that will surface in the coming years. Like you, I am stunned to hear this about Ravi. I never thought him perfect, but if I were to give you five men who I looked up to and helped pave the way for me to serve the Lord, Ravi would have been on that shortlist of people. So, it’s certainly an understatement to say how mortified I was to hear that he not only “defiled the marriage bed” but was acting out perpetually as a sexual predator for many decades.
