Growing Deeper

Read I Timothy 2:11-3:10

When you look outside and see creation, one thing that stands out is how everything works together, from how the earth revolves around the sun to how things grow and reproduce. When you study God in the Scriptures one thing that becomes apparent is how God is a God of order. When it comes to the church, why do you think God has structured the church the way He has? Why is order and structure so important in the body of Christ?

What is the role of Elders? See I Timothy 3:1-7, Acts 20:28 and 1 Peter 5:1-5.
The qualifications for an Elder fall into two categories—character and ability. How do the qualities mentioned in these verses divide into these two categories? (1 Timothy 3:1-7)

Why is an Elder’s family an important indicator of leadership potential or problems? How is leading a church similar to leading a family? (1 Timothy 3:4-5)

Why is spiritual maturity so important for church leadership? (1 Timothy 3:6, 10)
The qualifications for Elders as found in 1 Timothy 3 are essentially describing a mature Christian.
Which qualification presents you with the greatest challenge? How might your small group encourage you to grow in this area?

“An overseer must be above reproach.” Do you feel you are worthy of respect? Do you know your own weaknesses well enough to avoid situations that would compromise your integrity?

“Husband of one wife.” If you are married, are you faithful in mind and deed to your spouse? If single, how do you seek to control your sexual thoughts and desires?

“Not addicted to wine.” Are you prone to use alcohol or prescription drugs in excess?

“Not pugnacious, but gentle, not contentious.” Is your life characterized by irritability, bad-tempered speech or actions? How do you deal with others when they fail or let you down?

“Manages his own household well,” “having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion.” What aspects of household management hold the greatest potential to mar your testimony as a Christian leader?

“Must have a good reputation.” How are you perceived by those outside the church? Do they see Jesus in you?

Group Prayer Time
Last week we asked people to text in prayer requests during our gathering. Over 50 people texted various requests. So many people are in need of wisdom, provision, and direction in their lives and families. Please take some time to pray for the body of Christ at Summit View and for God to continue to direct and protect the Elders as they lead our church.

I love this picture of Izzy and I hanging out at Kat's Baptism this weekend. I'm so thankful I can take her with me to show her God's Kingdom growing and lives being transformed by the Spirit.

Praying for her and her kids and grand-kids to make a massive impact for Jesus!

Congratulations to missionaries Steven and Joy Sakanashi on the birth of their second son!

I'm so excited to share this update from my friend and former seminarian, Steven Sakanashi. Him and his wife Joy are missionaries over in Japan. I'm praising God for the birth of their second son and I'm so encouraged by their faithfulness and effectiveness on a difficult mission field.

I would highly encourage supporting Steven, Joy and their growing family as well as the incredible work their doing with the Megumi Initiative, church planting and community outreach.

Love these guys!

Their news letter update is posted below and you can get on their mailing list and follow them at the link below.
Family Update

On May 17th we celebrated the birth of our second son, Shotaro Nolan Sakanashi. We named him after one of my good friends, Nolan Roquet, who passed away from cancer when he was 24. You can learn more about the story here. Naturally, we are in the midst of a tiring season, but we are very grateful for good health and being together as a family. Please pray for us during the next few months as Shotaro grows (especially Joy as she is taking on the greater burden).

A few updates and prayer requests for this summer

Sekai Creator:

We will start our next batch of classes in Tokyo during the beginning of October. The focus this summer is on securing funding, building curriculum, and developing Japanese partnerships so that we will be able to increase capacity in Japan.

Recently, God has provided many great opportunities for me to serve through local partners in Japan. This spring I was asked to be a leader and mentor for two programs run by the TOMODACHI Initiative — the Global Leadership Academy and the Social Entrepreneurship Program. Next month I will travel to Tohoku, the region where the 2011 disaster struck, to help support local entrepreneurs looking to expand beyond Japan.

All of these opportunities have allowed me to serve in meaningful ways and establish partnerships which help Sekai Creator. They have also allowed me to develop valuable relationships and share about my relationship with Christ in personal settings.

Prayer

Please pray for me to be a good steward of these opportunities and serve in a way that honors Christ. Please pray for me to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading so that I can minister effectively within my relationships. And please pray that this summer’s efforts of preparation (funding, curriculum, partnerships) would be fruitful.

This summer our church will welcome three new families from the US. In addition to these new families, our church will host a mission team from the Hallows Church in Seattle during the first week of August. We will host an English day camp for local elementary school kids.

Overall, it’s been a really encouraging season for our church. We’ve been able to develop meaningful relationships with neighbors as we live everyday life together and try to serve our city. Recently, it seems that more people are being drawn to our church community, and we are also seeing a few people who are open to learning more about Christ.

Prayer

Please pray for the three families who will be moving to Japan this summer. Please pray for the upcoming English day camp with our volunteers from Seattle. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to open people’s hearts to Christ and to help our church members grow spiritually. Also, please pray for me as I am in the final stages of becoming an elder in our church. Please pray that God would grow me closer to him and enable me to have his heart towards others — my family first, then my church family, and everyone God brings into our lives.

Fundraising

Shortly before Shotaro was born I contact a few people about our financial needs and was overwhelmed by the immediate response. We received a few one-time gifts that helped to cover our monthly shortfall until the end of July, and also received some new monthly gifts. During the next 6 weeks I’ll continue to seek out new supporters with the goal of eliminating our current monthly shortfall of $1,500/month (giving link to share with others who may be interested in supporting).

Prayer

Please pray for God to provide for our needs. Please pray for this to be a season that draws our family closer to God in humble dependence and encourages us as we encounter the love and generosity of others. Please pray that my efforts in contacting people would bring greater joy to people as God grows their heart for Japan and world missions.

Thank you for your continued love, prayers, and support!

The Mission, the Message and the Mistakes (1 Timothy 2:1-10)

Summit View Church is in the second week of our summer sermon series called “Letters” in which we're working through the letters of 1 & 2 Timothy in the New Testament. The context is almost as important as the content because these letters were written by the older Apostle Paul to his younger pastoral apprentice Timothy.

Paul had started the church in the major city of Ephesus and left Timothy there to build the church by teaching the sound doctrine, raising up leaders and dealing with internal problems. Timothy is overwhelmed, timid, fearful and ready to quit. He is having to deal with heretics and nut jobs, false teaching and ageism – People don’t want to listen to Pastor Timothy because he is a kid in his 20's. Timothy wants to hit the eject button and go do something else with his life…. Apparently (1 Timothy 5:23) Timothy is having stomach ulcers, stress induced panic attacks and trouble sleeping from all the pressures of pastoral ministry in Ephesus. So Paul write this letter to encourage and instruct Timothy.

Paul is going to call Timothy’s church in Ephesus to the mission of praying for all people, remind them of the message of the Gospel and caution them against certain mistakes happening in the church. I’ve entitled this sermon: The mission, the message and the mistakes.

Big Idea: “We’re called to live prayerful, powerful and godly lives”

1. The Church is to Pray for Peace (1 Timothy 2:1-4)
2. The Church is to Testify about Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5-7)
3. The Church is to Exemplify Godliness (1 Timothy 2:8-10)

"I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or quarreling;" 1 Timothy 2:8

Questions for personal reflection and small group discussion

The Church is to pray for peace (1 Timothy 2:1-4
1. What kinds of people do you typically pray for and which do you typically not pray for?
2. How can you stretch yourself to pray specifically for people outside of your family this week?
3. What kinds of prayers should you pray for politicians you don’t agree with? How can you be praying during the current election season?
4. What advantages do we currently have in our country to live a vibrant Christian life because of the faithful prayers of other believers?
5. What challenges currently facing Christians should we be praying about?
The Church is to testify about Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5-7
6. How would you respond to someone who says that all religions are the same? What makes Jesus unique among all the religions of the world?
7. How would you express a person’s responsibility for his own actions in the light of God’s sovereignty?
The Church is to exemplify godliness (1 Timothy 2:8-10
8. How does our culture’s constantly changing view of sexuality, gender, liberty and empowerment affect the church’s view of modesty, purity and sexual ethics?
9. What experiences have you had of people purposely drawing attention to themselves during a church gathering?
10. How can older men and women follow the example of Paul to teach, train and model purity, modesty and biblical sexual ethics to younger men and women?

REFORMCON LIVE STREAM! (Day 1)

Can You Be So Gospel-Centered You Neglect Jesus?

Gospel-Centered theology focuses on justification by faith alone which produces gratitude. If we don't believe in justification, we make other things such as money, relationships and work into idols that "save" us.

9Marks Conference Tripp Lee on Perseverance

The challenge of perseverance is to be venerable with others. Leave no dark corners in your life in which you can still continue to hide. Don't pretend to be someone or something you are not. It's not heroic to lead others at the expensive of your own soul. We're not to big to fail. Get honest.
