Detox Finale / Same Page Summer

Memorial: Ravi Zacharias (1946-2020)

Beautiful Memorial Service for Ravi Zarcharias. Incredibly grateful for his life, example and impact. We've lost a distinctive and powerful voice for the Gospel.
As Ravi so eloquently put in his own words at the funeral of Billy Graham,
"we bury the messenger but the message goes on." Well done Mr. Zacharias.
Thank you for your work, wisdom, courage, and grace. You pointed me to Jesus and I'm eternally grateful.

CALL TO WORSHIP
READ: Psalm 9:1-10

SONG: Doxology
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost Amen

CONFESSION OF FAITH: THE APOSTLES CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
      creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
      He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      was crucified, died, and was buried;
      he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
      He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the holy catholic (universal) church,
      the communion of saints,
      the forgiveness of sins,
      the resurrection of the body,
      and the life everlasting. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING
READ: Deuteronomy 5:13-14

SONG: He is Exalted
He is exalted
The King is exalted on high
I will praise Him
He is exalted, forever exalted
And I will praise His name
He is the Lord
Forever His truth shall reign
Heaven and earth
Rejoice in His holy name
He is exalted
The King is exalted on high
He is exalted
The King is exalted on high
I will praise Him
He is exalted, forever exalted
And I will praise His name
He is the Lord
Forever His truth shall reign
Heaven and earth
Rejoice in His holy name
He is exalted
The King is exalted on high

SONG: Oh God
In the valley, Oh God, you're near
In the quiet, Oh God, you're near
In the shadow, Oh God, you're near
At my breaking, Oh God, you're near
Oh God, you never leave my side
Your love will stand firm for all my life
In my searching, Oh God, you're near
In my wandering, Oh God, you're near
When I feel alone, Oh God, you're near
At my lowest, Oh God, you're near
Height nor depth nor anything else
Could pull us apart
We are joined as one by your blood
Hope will rise as we become more
Than conquerors through
The one who loved the world
Oh God, you never leave my side
Your love will stand firm for all my life.

SONG: Be Thou My Vision
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light
Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one
Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art
High King of Heaven, my victory won
May I reach Heaven's joys, O bright Heaven's sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
The Dignity of Work - What was your very first job? What were the best and worst jobs you’ve had and why? Think about how Seattle views work. Do we give equal value to all types of work? Is work seen as a necessary evil?
The Toil of Work - How can sin make work hard, dissatisfying, selfish, and idolatrous?
The Redemption of Work - What are some ways that we can find meaning in the work that we do? How does our work bring benefits to ourselves, others, the community?

UPDATE FROM THE ELDER TEAM REGARDING CHURCH GATHERINGS
Many of you have been asking about Rainier Valley Church's plan to relaunch our weekly worship gatherings. We are posting this to keep you up to date and to clarify the current situation.

Yesterday President Trump said that Houses of Worship should be considered essential and should begin meeting together again immediately. However, President Trump's press secretary followed this up by saying that faith-based community gatherings are still under the jurisdiction of their local state governors.

Currently we are still following Washington State's 4-Phased reopening plan for the safety of our church members. Many pastors in the state (including me) have signed a petition to the governor to allow churches to operate under the same safety measures as restaurants and movie theaters in Phases 2 and 3. If you would like to sign the petition, you can find it here: https://www.wafaithgatherings.com/

Governor Inslee is expected to give faith-based communities specific reopening guidelines soon, and we will update you with all the latest as this situation continues to develop. Until we have more information, here is our current plan for reopening:
Phase 1 - Online Church with Family/Roommates (Current)
Phase 2 - House Church and Community Groups with 5+ Friends (June 1st?)
Phase 3 - Smaller Family-Style Services under 50 People  (June 29?)
Phase 4 - Regular Weekly Service with Kids Ministry (July 20th?)

Thank you all so much for your questions, concerns, and continued patience through this trying time. We can't wait to gather together again soon. In the meantime, we will continue providing worship guides and prerecorded worship music and sermons for "house church" on Sunday mornings. These resources will be posted on our website, Slack, and Facebook.

We will continue to submit ourselves to our local government authorities and comply with their guidelines as Scripture calls us to (Romans 13:1-7), and we will pray for the opportunity to come together safely for the gathered worship of singing together, learning together, praying together, and partaking in the Lord's Supper together.

We love you all, miss you dearly, and we will continue to keep you updated on all the latest. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Thank you all and have a blessed Memorial Day weekend!
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Kyle Van Tine

Worship and Announcements 5.17.20

SONG: Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind but now I see

Was Grace that taught my heart to fear
And Grace, my fears relieved
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed

Through many dangers, toils and snares
We have already come
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far
And Grace will lead us home

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise.
Then when we first began.

SONG: Nothing But The Blood
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
