Discussing the Problem of Evil w/ Dr. Bart Ehrman

The problem of evil was a key turning point in the life of Dr. Bart Ehrman. It's actually a big part of why he's agnostic. In this interview, Cameron Bertuzzi goes in depth with Dr. Ehrman on this problem. Norm Macdonald: The Image of God

In his more serious moments, the late comedian Norm Macdonald discussed God, suffering, the Bible, Christianity, and the soul. In this video, David Wood examines Norm's comments about the Christian doctrine that human beings are created in the image of God, and that Christ is the mediator. #NormMacDonald #ImageOfGod

Summit View "Compelled by Weakness" 2 Corinthians 11:1-12:10

CG Coaching for Week #12 of 2 Corinthians: A Church Compelled
Sunday, August 23rd sermon by Pastor Kyle Van Tine
"Compelled by Weakness" - (2 Cor 11:1-12:10)
Growing deeper
The biblical picture of the Church in the Bible is a bride. We are the Bride of Christ. Paul sees himself as the father of the Bride, protecting and preparing her to be presented to her Bridegroom, Christ Himself, when He returns to claim His Church. As a father, Paul is ready to defend his daughter the Church from the false doctrine that has threatened to turn her from the path to the altar before the Lord. Satan is always ready to lure the Church away with false promises that our sinful human hearts seek – health, prosperity, power, autonomy, heaven in the here and now. It’s easy for us, the waiting betrothed, to get anxious and seduced by the promises of a different “gospel” as our Bridegroom prepares a place for us. Satan’s seductive and beautiful light distracts the Church from the truth of the Gospel. We must not be tempted to follow artificial light. Beware of messages that claim we can have it all now. Our home is not the here and now. Christ’s life is our example. Paul’s boasting is in his weakness and sufferings for the Gospel. His sufferings were aimed at pointing to Christ’s work reconciling sinners with God. There is nothing else to authenticate the truth of the Gospel. The Christian life is a life that embraces everything counter culturally – weakness, suffering and a sacrificial love for others, so they might be saved. The Church is a place for the weak and lowly and broken - that is its strength.
Read 2 Corinthians 11- 12:10, John 3:16-36, 2 Peter 2
The Gospel is strange and out of step with the world. When we try to twist the Gospel into the world’s idea of power it becomes useless. The Gospel is not elitist. The end goal of the Gospel is the reconciliation of people with God and with each other. Any message that changes that is false.
Discuss how the Gospel message is one of reconciliation.
How do counterfeit gospels seek to distort that message?
Evaluate what are some possible counterfeit gospels you might be following in your life. Test those messages against what God’s Word says.
How are you preparing for the coming of your Bridegroom, Christ?

Easter Series 2015: Jesus Resolved - "Jesus and Lazarus" (John 11:17-53)

Sunday, March 15th - Pastor Kyle Van Tine -  "Jesus Resolved"  (John 11:17-53)

Discussion Questions

Resolved to Mourn  (John 11:17-37)
What are some reasons you have found, both biblically and practically, that an all-powerful and all-good God would allow suffering?
How should we respond when someone is suffering? What is helpful to say and do, and what isn’t helpful?
How have you personally experienced Christian faith and the Christian community supporting, serving and giving you hope and encouragement in the midst of your suffering?
Resolved to Raise  (John 11:38-45)
How can we help “roll away” the stone in other people’s lives to get them to Jesus?
How do the life and ministry of Jesus change the way we understand and undergo suffering?
What does Lazarus’ resurrection teach us about God’s heart and plan for suffering?
Resolved to Die  (John 11:46-53)
How does Jesus’ death in our place, for our sin help us when we’re struggling with condemnation and guilt?
Substitution is the heart of Christian faith, but how would you explain the mercy and justice of God to a non-Christian who is unfamiliar with the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection?

Just About, Nearly, Almost Christmas! - Matthew 2:1-23

It's Christmas time and the decorations are going up, the music is playing, the lights are on and the Christmas movies are back in full force! Regardless of wither there is a Grinch, an Elf or Bing Crosby belting out "I'm dreaming of a White Christmas," all Christmas movies follow roughly the same formula. Christmas is coming but oh no, there is a problem! That problem almost causes Christmas not to happen but in the end the heroes come through and we celebrate every time!
This theme of the near misses of Christmas frames up our sermon series at Summit View Church this year. We’re looking at the near misses of Christmas in the Bible.

This last Sunday I preached a message on Matthew 2 entitled "Jesus Overcomes" looking at the six aspects of how the classic Christmas story of the wise men, king Herod and the journey to Egypt shows the sovereignty, goodness and control of our triune God over cultural barriers, tyrants, indifference, evil and every circumstance.  My hope and pray is that this message blesses you and stirs you up to celebrate Christmas.

  1.          Jesus overcomes cultural barriers 2:1-2
  2.          Jesus overcomes tyrants 2:3-6
  3.          Jesus overcomes Indifference 2:7-11
  4.          Jesus overcomes Evil 2:12-18
  5.          Jesus overcomes every circumstance 2:19-23
