Questions for Growing Deeper

We are worshipers responding to Jesus’ holiness. (6:1-5)
  • We are all wired to worship. How do you see this around you both in religious and non-religious ways?
  • How can we become aware of the difference between loving and appreciating something or someone and actually worshiping that person or thing?
  • Why is Jesus’ holiness a motivation for worship?
We are worshipers being transformed by Jesus’ grace. (6:6-7)
  • Discuss this statement: We become like what we worship.
  • How have you seen people becoming like what they worship?
  • How have you personally and specifically been transformed by worshiping Jesus lately?
  • If the underlying heart issue is always worship, which idols do you find your heart drawn toward?
We are worshipers being  sent on Jesus’ mission. (6:8)
  • How have you seen or experienced a worship lifestyle function as a form of evangelism?
  • What does it look like for you practically to worship at work, at school or in the home? What might need to change in your belief, behavior, words, attitudes or actions?

What is your favorite Thanksgiving tradition and your favorite Thanksgiving memory?

We often thank God for our meals, families and perhaps our jobs, but who are you thankful for today?
How can you make thanking others for the blessing they have been in your life a priority?
When do you typically feel most entitled, covetous or envious?
How do you show thanksgiving and gratitude to God during this season?
We often believe that we deserve this or that, but as Christians, how can our attitude of gratitude impact us and those around us?

3. Praying boldly to the God who enables all things (4:29-31)
Have you ever experienced God giving you a boldness that wasn’t your own? What was the situation and what happened?

Summit View "Compelled by Obedience" 2 Corinthians 10:1-18

CG Coaching for Week #11 of 2 Corinthians: A Church Compelled
Sunday, August 16th sermon by Pastor Kyle Van Tine
"Compelled by Obedience" - (2 Cor 10:1-18)
Questions for Discussion "Growing deeper"
Jesus didn’t strut onto the world stage like a Hollywood star. He came meekly into the world as a baby born in a barn, lived his childhood in obscurity, ministered while homeless and died a humiliating death on a cross. Yet His divine power was unimaginable. He contained His power to become the sacrificial Lamb that saved us. Meekness is strength submitted to the proper authority. Paul writes strong words against those who want their showiness to be interpreted as authority and power. Their super-apostle strength was all show with no real power. Their authority was devoid of God’s truth, and Paul outlines ways to not be deceived by their error. Paul wasn’t looking for man’s approval; he knew he wasn’t impressive by man’s standards. Paul wasn’t willing to compromise the gospel because he sought God’s approval only. He did not want the false elitism and improper boasting of the few to stop the many in the Corinthian church from growing in faith and maturity. Like the Tower of Babel, some had built citadels to their own works, believing in their own power to save rather than God’s. They were measuring themselves by the world’s standards, looking to impress. We must be careful not to muddy the gospel for approval. The only criteria we should measure ourselves, and others who claim truth, is Christ - His character, His meekness, His deeds, His words, His suffering, His resurrection. Our boast is in Christ alone.
Read 2 Corinthians 10:1-8, Galatians 1:6-12, Philippians 2:1-11.
Biblical meekness is a submissiveness towards God. Our pride is laid at the feet of Jesus. We must test true gospel messages to see if they are submitted and pointing towards the Gospel.  No matter how impressive a speaker, a vision or a miracle is, if it doesn’t point to Christ it is useless. We need to become people of The Book.
Who are you seeking approval from?
How does what you are impressed by line up with God and His character?
What are some points of pride in your life you need to surrender to God?
Who in your life do you need to humble yourself and serve?

Summit View Church's Updated Bylaws July 8th 2015

Statement of Faith

Recently the elders of Summit View Church drafted a statement summarizing biblical truth regarding marriage, sex, and procreation. This statement will be presented by the elders to our congregation and added to our bylaws.

“We believe that marriage was ordained by God at creation as the sacred union of one man and one woman. All sexual relations must therefore be reserved for that union. Christian marriage is a representation of Christ’s relationship to His church. We also believe that children are a blessing from the Lord. Thus, all human life is sacred and worthy of protection from the moment of conception.”

New Year's 2015 - "A New You" - John 3:1-15

Well it's New Year’s 2015. How many of you guys have made a New Year’s Resolution? Culturally we love and celebrate New Year’s because it represents a time to start over, that we can change, that we can start off with a clean slate. I’m not against new year’s resolutions I think they can be helpful, I think they can be a form of repentance but New Year’s cannot produce a new you. Resolutions can produce behavior modification but not heart transformation

Big Idea: Jesus didn't come to make us better; he came to make us new!
-The Necessity of New Birth (John 3:1-3)
-The Nature of The New Birth (John 3:4-6)
-The Evidence of the New Birth (John 3:7-8)
-The Basis of the New Birth (John 3:9-15)

You can listen to "A New You" by following this link.
